“CNET Appliances” to Launch in September with Most Comprehensive Coverage
Of Rapidly Growing Category
Rich Brown Named Executive Editor, Reporting to Reviews Editor-in-Chief Lindsey Turrentine; Operations to be Based in Louisville
SAN FRANCISCO, July 24, 2013 – CNET, the world’s #1 tech news and reviews brand, today announced that “CNET Appliances” will debut in September, offering consumers the most-comprehensive product reviews within the rapidly growing smart-home category. Executive Editor Rich Brown will oversee the brand’s reviews coverage from Louisville, Ky., where a 12,000-square-foot lab is being specially constructed for the effort, said Lindsey Turrentine, CNET’s editor-in-chief of reviews.
“The definition of consumer technology is expanding and now includes smart appliances, yet no established, respected free source exists to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions for the home,” Turrentine said. “CNET Appliances is a natural extension of the CNET brand, and Rich Brown is the perfect person to lead our effort. His team will examine all aspects of a product’s usability so consumers can understand what they need to know before investing in something as small as a kitchen appliance to something larger and more expensive, such as a home automation system.”
A veteran journalist, Brown has reviewed almost every major consumer-technology hardware and software product since he became a reporter in 1994. He has spent nearly 10 years with CNET, where he was first to review the emerging category of 3D printers, among other new innovations. Brown will relocate to Louisville this summer to oversee the build-out of the reviews lab and direct the team’s editorial efforts.
“As the smart-home category continues to grow, consumers face many choices and need a smart, useful, and entertaining advisor,” Brown said. “I’m looking forward to helping consumers find the right appliance that addresses their needs and budget criteria.”
CNET has more unique visitors than any other tech news and reviews site in the world. In the first quarter of 2013, the site averaged nearly five times as many uniques as its closest competitor, according to comScore.
