Cynthia on the Difficult Decision to Go Back and Do “And Just Like That…”

Drew: Is it true that is was almost a difficult choice for you, something you battled with grappled with, to do ‘And Just Like That…’?

Cynthia: Well yes, if you revisit something that was such a big part of your life and so iconic. I mean it’s a big step but also it seemed to me we are very different people now, we are very different ages now. We were in our early 30’s when we started, we are 55, 56 now. And the world is very different. I wanted to be sure, and I think we all wanted to be sure that when we went back we could save a lot of what was great about the original and fix what was maybe not so great. Like the fact that it was such an overwhelmingly white show. That we would really open up the door and invite these new characters in and really do right by them so we could get great actors and actresses to play them.

Drew: Sara Ramirez. I am freaking out. Is it true that you hand-picked them.

Cynthia: I suggested them because I’ve been aware of them for so long and such a fan. Mike Nichols, I worked with Mike Nichols a bunch of times especially when I was young and he cast Sara in ‘Spamalot,’ for which they won a Tony. So I was always watching their career and stuff.

Drew: I love Che so much.

Cynthia on Miranda’s Self-Discovery Journey

Drew: What is it that we are supposed to learn? What is Miranda representing in this journey of discovery?

Cynthia: I mean you know the age that these characters are, like I’m 55, I’m going to be 56 this year and that’s Miranda’s age. You reach a moment, when you put a negative spin on it you call it a mid-life crisis, right? But out of crisis come really productive things. You are not young anymore but you are not old either. And you still have time to make sure that your life is the way you want it to be. If you are deeply unhappy in your career choices, if you are really unhappy in your marriage you should look at it and demand more right?

Drew: And if you are also having a giant change in your life are you not acting giddy and youthful and off kilter. I mean that’s what it seems like Miranda is going through.

Cynthia: Right? I mean Miranda is very smart and tenacious and very strong but she’s always been kind of a bull in a china shop kind of rushing ahead and then go back and sweep up the china afterwards. It’s interesting that people, I don’t know I think some people are not loving seeing these characters off kilter but I love it.

Drew: I love it. It makes me so appreciative that time has passed and people have changed. I am so not who I was five years ago, let alone ten years ago.
