FORMER FIRST LADY LAURA BUSH ON BARBARA WALTERS' HEART SURGERY: "BARBARA BUSH HAD THE SURGERY AND IS DOING VERY WELL"

May 12, 2010 (Los Angeles, CA) -- ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT's MARY HART sat down with former First Lady Laura Bush for a special new three-part interview to begin airing tonight, May 12th.

On Barbara Walters' heart valve replacement surgery, Mrs. Bush says that Barbara Bush, her mother-in-law, had a similar surgery a year ago, "She's doing very well. She scared us a couple of weeks ago and went into the hospital, but she's doing great."

Mrs. Laura Bush visits ET to talk about her just-released memoir, Spoken From the Heart. On returning to private life after eight years in the White House, Mrs. Bush says, "I worried about George really, about the transition. The President of the United States has every problem in the world on his desk and then the next day when he's not president, his desk is clean. But he's done great. It's been a fairly easy transition."

Mrs. Bush goes on to say that the press could be harsh and no one is immune to criticism. Have the Obamas called asking for advice? "Well, they haven't called [for] that," she says. "But President Obama did ask George and President Clinton to head the private fundraising for Haiti relief. We've seen each other a couple of times, once at Senator Kennedy's funeral, but we haven't talked a lot."

When she moved to the White House, Mrs. Bush says it was quite an adjustment, "The pressure is on the First Lady to always look good, to never have a bad hair day, to dress in beautiful American designer clothes, and that was really not my style. In Dallas I'd worn jeans to baseball games night after night."

The Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, grew up in the public eye, but Mrs. Bush recalls one frightening twist following the invasion of Iraq, "I remember the day that my Secret Service agent came in and told me that Barbara and Jenna's photographs were on the wall of Saddam Hussein's sons' houses. And I remember how chilling that was to me. I didn't tell Barbara and Jenna at the time because I didn't want to worry them." Today Mrs. Bush says the girls are both doing "great."

Mrs. Bush also speaks about her problems conceiving, recalling a coincidence as they began the adoption process, "We were on the way to the adoption home and we'd actually already had our interviews with a very well known adoption agency and we had checked twins when we filled out the application. Then I found out I was pregnant [with twins]!"
