Ross on Losing His Mother To Breast Cancer & What He Learned From The Experience

Ross: We’re talking about my amazing mom. My mom was the best…my mom was named Gay Mathews. Can you believe it, Gay and gayer Mathews. She thought that was so funny. She fought so hard with such dignity and went into remission and in 2020 right before we met she passed away. I learned so much being up close and personal with her during this process. It was so heartbreaking but it also taught me so much about strength and family and love. How strong she was and how much I loved her and still do, it was such a gift to have that time.

Drew: What is something from your experience that we could all learn from that you learned in a process you didn’t want to be a student of?

Ross: I guess it’s like having the hard conversations. My job was always kind of to be the clown, make her laugh and let’s focus on something else, but then we had to focus on it and it was a real challenge because I let her, I watched her come to terms with it and I didn’t change the subject, and that was peaceful for her.

Drew: I do think that we all play a very mental tennis game in our head about our health. I self diagnose all day long and the results are horrible, and that’s not the way I should be doing it so I’m taking trying to take control and figure this out and I want to take everyone on that journey with me because I’m totally imperfect. I’m just another human walking around with the fear of getting bad news. But I know facing it is everything…I’m gonna be forty-nine and having two kids has changed everything for me. It matters if I stick around, it matters what I do to myself. I’m way more accountable to myself than I ever have been…
