Ghost Light: The Year Broadway Went Dark” Premieres on Thursday, Sept. 16 at 9:00 PM, ET on CBSN and Is Streaming Now Across CBS News’ Digital Properties

When Covid shut down dream jobs and the economic engine – a more than $15 billion industry – for one of the greatest cities in the world, performers, composers, ushers and customers alike all had their lives turned upside down as Broadway was forced to go dark. Now, after over 500+ days, Broadway is finally coming back.

GHOST LIGHT: THE YEAR BROADWAY WENT DARK, the latest CBSN Originals documentary, premieres Thursday, Sept. 16 at 9:00 PM, ET on CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 streaming service, and is available now across all CBS News digital properties.

In the documentary, we hear from actors, writers and producers of some of Broadway’s most well-known shows who share their first-hand experiences of what life has been like the past 18 months without being able to take the stage.

Broadway was a way of life for a lot of us,” said Rivera. “You see a lot of Broadway performers – they were probably either professional performers when they were children, or they got their degree, their BFA, their MFA in theater. Some people just fight their entire career to get to Broadway. Some people don’t even get that opportunity. So when literally, they put the ghost light out, they lock the doors and nobody is allowed in the theater, we don’t know what to do.”

The CBSN Originals documentary series delivers immersive reports that take a deep dive into some of the key issues driving national and global conversations. To date, CBS News has streamed more than 70 originals on a range of topics, including the mass migration from Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria; social media’s role in the violence against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar; gender identity; and the dangerous journey to America through the Darien Gap, among others.
