<p>PROGRAM GIVES ADDICTS THE CHOICE: JAIL OR REHAB - WEDNESDAY ON "60 MINUTES II"</p>
The words "you're busted" have a new meaning for Philadelphia drug addicts, since a novel program allows undercover cops to offer them a trip to rehab instead of a ride to the station. Correspondent Dan Rather reports on this unique approach to the war on drugs on 60 MINUTES II, Wednesday, June 19 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
The program is administered by a self-proclaimed minister, who is also a former drug addict and convicted felon. "The Reverend" Henry Wells hopes to stop addicts from going the route that put him behind bars. "...You don't have a record now, but you're going to have one tomorrow...You haven't robbed anyone yet...haven't turned a trick yet...I guarantee you, it won't be long," Wells says as he warns addicts whom the police bring to him.? "[Drug addiction] is a hideous disease..." he tells Rather. "Very few people can crawl out of this pit, so you have to throw them a rope."
Even with a rope, few complete the journey from addiction to recovery. Only 75 addicts joined the program after being caught trying to buy drugs from undercover officers -- and just four of them stayed clean. But to police fighting a losing battle against drugs, even one conversion in Wells' program is an improvement, and that's why they offer the choice.
It was a good choice for Allan Burgess, who kicked his 20-year habit with Wells' help. "When I got arrested, had I gone, had I not taken this choice, I'd have probably been out of jail in six to eight hours and because of that, have the opportunity to continue to do what I was doing."
Jeff Fager is the executive producer of 60 MINUTES II and Steve Glauber and Chris Martin are the producers.
