When Ray Wright, 55, suddenly lost contact with his family, they knew something was wrong. Two days later, his brother confronted an intruder in Ray Wright’s home. What happened to Wright was a mystery. Then, 16 days after Ray Wright vanished, a high-speed chase gave police clues to what happened. Natalie Morales reports on the case in 48 HOURS: “Who Took Our Dad? The Abduction of Ray Wright” to be broadcast Saturday, Feb. 3 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+.

Wright’s daughters Kennedy Wright and Haley Kendall were worried when their dad didn’t show up at his carpentry shop and didn’t answer any calls or texts.

“I knew something bad was happening to him. I felt it,” says Kendall.

Wright’s brother Dean Wright felt it too. He headed to his brother’s house and looked around. That’s when he realized someone was in the house and it wasn’t his brother.

“And a guy yelled at me, ‘Get out of here.’ … And I said, ‘Who are you? … Where’s Ray?’” Dean Wright tells 48 HOURS.

The intruder fled but left behind a soda cup on the kitchen counter. It would be a while before investigators would figure out who that intruder was. It began with a police chase.

“It was a very dangerous high-speed chase with speeds of up to 100 miles an hour,” prosecutor Matt Chisholm tells Morales. “There was a terrible accident at the end of that pursuit.”

The driver was a man named Victor Gray. And in his wrecked van was a treasure trove of evidence.

“This is huge for us, that we found all this evidence,” Sergeant Zack Lewis tells Morales.

Prosecutors say they found a photograph on Gray’s cellphone of a letter he wrote to a man named Bob. Gray was demanding payment for delivering the “dude” to Bob. Prosecutors say Gray wrote that he “hand delivered you your revenge ... ”

To authorities, it sounded like Gray had abducted Ray Wright at Bob’s request, but they had no idea who Bob was or why he would want revenge.
