CBS Sports' 2008 PGA TOUR Coverage Broadcast in HDTV
CBS Sports begins its 58th year broadcasting golf in 2008, continuing to offer viewers the most comprehensive lineup in the history of network television. CBS Sports will broadcast 24 golf tournaments, totaling more than 150 hours, including and the Mastersâ, PGA Championship, 19 PGA TOUR events, two LPGA TOUR events and one Champions Tour event.
Jim Nantz, now in his 23rd year overall covering golf for CBS Sports, serves as anchor for the Networks' golf coverage. Nick Faldo, winner of six majors and more than 40 tournaments worldwide, returns for his second year as lead analyst alongside Nantz in the 18th tower. Nantz and Faldo are complemented by CBS Sports' award-winning golf announce team of Peter Oosterhuis, Gary McCord, David Feherty, Peter Kostis, Ian Baker-Finch, Bobby Clampett, Dick Enberg, Bill Macatee and Verne Lundquist as CBS Sports tees off the 2008 season at the Buick Invitational on January 26-27.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the world's No. 1 and 2-ranked players, respectively, make their 2008 PGA TOUR season debut when they tee it up at the BUICK INVITATIONAL on CBS Sports. Woods, defending champion and four-time Buick winner, takes on San Diego's hometown favorite Mickelson, a three-time Buick winner, in one of the strongest early-season fields in golf including Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, K.J. Choi, Rory Sabbatini, Stewart Cink, Geoff Ogilvy, Charles Howell III, Jesper Parnevik, Fred Couples, Tom Lehman, Mark O'Meara, Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, Nick O'Hern, Lucas Glover, Robert Allenby, Steve Elkington and fan favorite John Daly.
CBS Sports broadcasts third and final-round coverage of the BUICK INVITATIONAL from the Torrey Pines Golf Club South Course on Saturday, Jan. 26 (3:00-6:00 PM, ET) and Sunday, Jan. 27 (3:00-6:30 PM, ET), live on the CBS Television Network. Nantz, Faldo, Oosterhuis, McCord, Ian-Baker Finch, Kostis and Feherty provide commentary.
In 2008, CBS Sports will broadcast all 19 PGA TOUR events in HDTV. CBS Sports will continue to broadcast the Masters and the PGA Championship in HDTV. The 2000 Masters was the first golf tournament presented live in HDTV on network television.
Highlights of the 2008 schedule:
19 PGA TOUR events: Buick Invitational, FBR Open, AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Northern Trust Open (formally Nissan), Verizon Heritage, EDS Byron Nelson Championship, Wachovia Championship, AT&T Classic, Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, the Memorial Tournament Presented by Morgan Stanley, Stanford St. Jude Championship, Travelers Championship, Buick Open, AT&T National, John Deere Classic, RBC Canadian Open, World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, Wyndham Championship and The Barclays.
The Masters, the most renowned golf tournament and the longest-running sports event on CBS Sports will be showcased for the 53rd consecutive year from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Coverage includes a pair of 15-minute highlight shows recounting early-round action on Thursday, April 10 and Friday, April 11 (11:35-11:50 PM, ET, both nights). Live coverage of the third round will be broadcast on Saturday, April 12 (3:30-7:00 PM, ET) and live 18-hole final-round coverage will be presented on Sunday, April 13 (2:30-7:00 PM, ET).
The 90th PGA Championship, the season's final major which annually hosts the strongest field in championship golf, will be broadcast by CBS Sports for the 18th consecutive year. Coverage begins with highlights of early-round action on Thursday, Aug. 7 and Friday, Aug. 8 (12:37-1:07 AM, ET, both nights). Live, 18-hole coverage of the third and final rounds will be broadcast on Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10 (2:00-7:00 PM, ET, both days) from Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
The final round of the LPGA's first major of the year, the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship will be broadcast on CBS Sports on Sunday, April 6 (3:00-6:00 PM, ET). The LPGA Ginn Clubs and Resorts Open will be broadcast on Saturday, April 19 (1:30-3:30 PM, ET) and Sunday, April 20 (1:00-3:00 PM, ET, both days). The Champions Tour will be featured on Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27 (1:00-3:00 PM, ET, both days) with the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Savannah Harbor Golf Resort in Savannah, Ga.
CBS Sports also will broadcast three PGA TOUR Specials and two PGA of America Specials and a PGA Championship Preview Show in addition to other golf specials throughout the year. In addition, "Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta: The 1978 Masters" will be broadcast on Sunday, April 13 (1:30-2:30 PM, ET) and "Eighties at Augusta" will be featured on Saturday, April 12 (2:30-3:30 ET, PM).
