SIMON & SCHUSTER INAUGURATES INDIAN PUBLISHING PROGRAM

New York, NY (January 3, 2006) - Simon & Schuster will inaugurate an Indian publishing program in early 2007. PLANET INDIA by Asia Society Associate Fellow Dr. Mira Kamdar, a February 2007 title from Scribner, is slated as the company's first local publication on the subcontinent.

For its Indian publishing program, Simon & Schuster will select a number of titles from its U.S. and U.K. operations to publish in English-language Indian editions.  All titles published by Simon & Schuster in India will be printed locally, and priced, packaged and marketed specifically for the Indian marketplace.

Simon & Schuster's Indian publishing program follows on the opening of a New Delhi based dedicated office in 2006.  The program will be overseen by Rahul Srivastava, who was named the company's Regional Sales manager for India.

"India is one of the fastest growing English language markets and a world class economic dynamo with a highly literate populace," said Jack Romanos, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster, Inc.  "An expanding presence there with dedicated sales, marketing and publishing capabilities will be vital to Simon & Schuster's international publishing efforts in the years ahead."

"PLANET INDIA is the perfect choice for launching our Indian publishing program," added Cyrus Kheradi, Vice President, Group Sales Director, International Division "As India becomes increasingly important to the global marketplace, we expect that a selective list of locally published S&S titles will succeed in reaching India's vast English-speaking audience." Titles for the Indian publishing program will be chosen by Kheradi and Srivastava, working in close coordination with publishing operations in the U.S. and U.K. to determine the list of titles for Indian publication

World rights to PLANET INDIA were acquired by Scribner editor Alexis Gargagliano from Sterling Lord at Sterling Lord Literistic Agency.  PLANET INDIA will be published in India on January 26th (Republic Day), ahead of its February U.S. and June U.K publication, and Dr. Kamdar will visit India to promote the book.

ABOUT PLANET INDIA

India is rising-financially, culturally and politically-and the transformation of this nation of 1.2 billion people will have a colossal impact on the world.  As Smriti Mundhra, a young Indian American filmmaker states in PLANET INDIA: "Who needs the American audience?  There are only three hundred million people here."   Understanding India has never been so important.

PLANET INDIA (Scribner; February 20, 2007; $26.00) by Mira Kamdar - author of the award-winning memoir Motiba's Tattoos: A Granddaughter's Journey from America into Her Indian Family's Past and a frequent commentator on India for CNN International, the BBC, Public Radio International, American Desi TV, South Asia World, and TV Asia - is a comprehensive view of India and the cultural and economic impact it is having, and will continue to have, on the United States and the world.  With dozens of interviews - from people such as Mukesh Ambani, head of India's largest company, Reliance, who is included on the Forbes billionaire list; to Mira Nair, director of Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair and The Namesake; to Deepak Chopra - in-depth research, a wealth of recent data, and thoughtful and provocative analysis, Kamdar will analyze the challenges before India - the country's growing gap between rich and poor, the AIDS crisis, and the degradation of the environment - and celebrate India's tremendous vitality and the opportunities this Asian democracy has to shape its own and, perhaps, all of our destinies.

India's fate is our fate.  As Kamdar says, "India encompasses all of the promise and peril of this moment and because it is touching our lives in more ways than most of us imagine, we already live on planet India."  Accessible and provocative, PLANET INDIA is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of America and the world.
