NEW YORK, OCTOBER 1, 2007-Susan Moldow, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Scribner, announced that Scribner has signed with baseball legend Willie Mays for the first authorized biography to be written about his extraordinary life and career. Bestselling writer James S. Hirsch will write the book. Nan Graham, Vice President, Editor-in-Chief and Brant Rumble, Senior Editor of Scribner concluded the deal with Todd Shuster of Zachary Shuster Harmsworth for the book which Graham and Rumble will co-edit. A publication date has not been set.
"Willie Mays is one of America's greatest treasures who redefined the sport of baseball and became an iconic cultural figure," said Graham. "It is a privilege to add this project to our growing list of bestselling baseball books."
Mays, 76, agreed to this book because it will unequivocally define his legacy, both on and off the field. His share of the proceeds will support Mays' Say Hey Foundation, which advances children's causes. Mays and the foundation are represented by San Francisco attorney Jeffrey L. Bleich of Munger, Tolles & Olson.
Generally recognized as the greatest all-around player in baseball history, Willie Mays also played an important though underappreciated role in developing the science of modern baseball. His remarkable baseball achievements-660 home runs, 3,283 hits, and 12 Gold Gloves, covering almost 3,000 games in 22 years-testify to his unsurpassed athletic skills, durability, and character.
Hirsch, a former reporter for the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, is the author of four books: Hurricane: The Miraculous Journey of Rubin Carter; Riot and Remembrance: The Tulsa Race War and Its Legacy; Two Souls Indivisible: The Friendship That Saved Two American POWs in Vietnam, and Cheating Destiny: Living with Diabetes, America's Biggest Epidemic.
