Successful Philippa Gregory LIVE Global Web Event Puts Bestselling Author of The Other Boleyn Girl in Touch with Fans Around the World
(New York, NY, September 19, 2007) Philippa Gregory reached out to her fans across the United States and around the world in a unique and tremendously successful live global video web event on Sunday, September 16, 2007. Philippa Gregory LIVE, which was organized by Gregory's publisher Touchstone Books, stimulated an active dialogue between Gregory and her fans, who participated from their personal home computers, from bookstores that hosted in store events, libraries, or with book clubs or friends.
From London England, for an hour and a half Gregory answered questions from readers spanning the globe, from Vancouver, WA to Charleston, SC to far flung parts of the United Kingdom, as well as from a live studio audience. The enthusiastic studio audience at the Mayfair Conference Center even included a direct descendant of Mary Boleyn, who Ms. Gregory invited to attend.
"I was thrilled by the success of this event and delighted by the wonderful response I received from my readers," said Gregory. "I have long wanted to find a way to speak directly to readers and reader groups that may not be able to attend events on my regular book tours. Through this new technology the readers were able to fully share an evening with was live in London and worldwide. This was a very special evening and I feel sure that many more people will want to see the recording, and that we will want to do something like this again."
This is the first time an author such as Gregory has participated in an interactive web event of this scale. Christine Lloreda, Vice President and Deputy Publisher for Touchstone Books commented, "We are extremely pleased by the outcome of this online venture. This event was a successful accomplishment and a great new way for Philippa and her fans around the world to come together. We are always looking for new methods to reach and build our author's audience, and we are encouraged by the response we received. We will be looking at similar events in the future."
Reader response after the event has been extremely positive, including comments from online bloggers such as the Literate Housewife who said, "The hour and a half just flew by...It's great what the Internet makes possible. There was no delay between what she said and her mouth like I had expected. I hope that more such events take place." Living Read Girl commented in her blog, "...I was able to tune in just fine and even had my question answered live. My fan girl cup runneth over with joy at that moment. It's a shame that my evening entertainment [The Emmy's] didn't quite measure up to the pleasant time spent with Philippa Gregory earlier in the day."
For book clubs and those who wanted to share the fun with others, a variety of venues hosted this event or assisted in promoting to their customers - national chains, independent booksellers, and libraries - including Borders in New York City, R.J. Julia in Madison, Connecticut, Books, Inc. in San Francisco, California, Rancho Mirage Public Library in California, A Likely Story in Sykesville, Maryland, Rakestraw in Danville, California, A Novel Idea in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and A Great Good Place for Books in Oakland, California. Fact & Fiction in Missoula, Montana sponsored a joint event at the Missoula Public Library, inviting the local community, book groups, and librarians to attend. A bookstore employee bookstore commented afterwards that their audience loved that it was a live event and while they did not ask Gregory any questions, they appreciated that they could have - "That's the charm of it because you knew it was live." Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, Arizona added to the festive atmosphere by providing scones, coffee, tea, and chocolates for their event and had a great turnout of not only eager Gregory readers but new fans as well.
Currently, there are more than 3.5 million copies of Philippa Gregory's novels in print. Other bestsellers by Gregory include The Queen's Fool, The Constant Princess, and her series of books known as The Wideacre Trilogy.
