AERIAL AMERICA: WILDERNESS

PREMIERES SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 AT 9PM ET/PT

New York, August 19, 2014 – It has been 50 years since President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the groundbreaking Wilderness Act of 1964, which created a way for Americans to protect their most pristine wildlands for future generations. Now, over 750 regions have been designated for protection from Alaska’s glacial landscapes to more than a million acres of Florida’s everglades. To commemorate the anniversary, Smithsonian Channel will premiere AERIAL AMERICA: WILDERNESS, a special episode of its popular series, on Sunday, September 7th at 9 p.m. The hour-long episode will take viewers on an aerial tour of America’s most breathtaking natural landscapes and national parks protected by the Wilderness Act of 1964.

Some are easily accessible. Some can only be reached by plane. All of them are magnificent. These are the pockets of America where nature rules and regions are protected by the Wilderness Act. AERIAL AMERICA: WILDERNESS takes flight on a cross-country journey over the icy wild of Alaska, past western mountains and otherworldly stone monoliths, and across deserts, badlands and everglades. Collectively these untamed worlds tell the story of America’s ancient history, its westward expansion, and its grassroots conservation.

AERIAL AMERICA offers the ultimate “bird’s eye view” of our nation, the compelling stories behind its rich history... and the seemingly endless beauty of its land.  Shot from a helicopter armed with a state-of-the-art Cineflex V-14 HD camera system, each episode uses breathtaking aerial cinematography to reveal what makes each of the 50 United States unique - from beautiful natural landmarks, to sites of important turning points in history, to fascinating locations far off the beaten path... and the rich variety of wildlife that calls each state home.

AERIAL AMERICA: WILDERNESS is executive produced by Linda Goldman, David Royle and Charles Poe.
